The United States now demands that the social media usernames for all visa applicants must be provided as part of a stepped-up screening of foreign visitors and immigrants.
This is a follow up on a 2017 order by President Donald Trump requiring heightened vetting for visa applicants according to a State Department official, which was announced last year and taking effect this month.
The official said that national security is a top priority. An estimated 14 million travelers and about 750,000 immigrants will be affected by this change.
The American Civil Liberties is arguing that this would create “an environment ripe for profiling and discrimination.”
