Dante Austin, Philadelphia’s first openly gay deputy sheriff, commits suicide

Dante Austin, Philadelphia’s first gay deputy sheriff has killed himself.

Austin, 27, was an Army veteran, who also served as the department’s first LGBTQ community liaison, was found dead at his desk from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, on Friday.

Reflecting on Austin’s service with the Philadelphia police department which he joined in 2013, Sheriff Jewell Williams called the death “a tragedy for the sheriff’s community, Austin’s family and the local LGBTQ community.”
He further said that “Dante was a person who believed in and cared for everybody.”

The rainbow pride flag at the Philadelphia sheriff’s office was lowered in his honour on Friday.
